Wigan Flashes

Map Ref: SD 580 035
O.S. Pathfinder 711

A large area of ex-industrial land covering 260 hectares and containing several water bodies: Pearson's, Scotman's, Turner, Ochre and Horrocks Flashes, most if not all, resulting from mining subsidence, which has over time turned into a most rewarding place to see many species of birds. Its only discomforts being the occasional sound of bikers and sometimes fisherman's litter. Other habitats include: woodland, scrub and marshy areas, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal (Leigh Branch) dissects the site, eventually passing through Leigh and skirting Pennington Flash on its way to join with the Bridgewater Canal at Worsley Basin.

Directions: From the A49 which is one of the main thoroughfares of Wigan find the B5238 Poolstock Lane, park near the Church and walk to the canal towpath.

A good list of species can be noted on any day of the year with concentrations of certain birds at seasonal times. Recent habitat work has been carried out to attract Bitterns to breed, and "the species is increasingly recorded in winter, lately".

There are many paths to explore but if it is your first visit I suggest you stick to the canal towpath to get your bearings.
